Your new veneers are an investment in your smile, your self-esteem, and, well, your wallet. So, it’s no surprise that you want to make sure they last as long as possible. But what can you do to keep them looking and fitting as great as they did on day one? Here are a few care tips to help you get the most out of your gorgeous new grin!
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Though it varies by patient, with proper care and use you can expect your new veneers to last ten or more years. In some cases, they may even last up to twenty! But keeping them looking and working their best is often a matter of how you treat them.
Caring for Your New Veneers
The best way to ensure that your veneers last as long as possible is to take good care of them. You can do this by following these care steps:
- Always brush your veneers with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Never use abrasive or whitening toothpaste on them, as this can scratch them, and whitening paste could damage the cement holding them to your teeth.
- Floss your teeth daily.
- Visit your dentist regularly for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments.
- Never use your teeth to bite fingernails, crunch ice or hard candies, or tear open packaging.
- If you grind your teeth or play sports, wear a mouth guard.
Teeth with veneers can still get cavities, and they are not indestructible, so you can break or damage them if you aren’t careful or use proper hygiene.
Furthermore, remember that because a small amount of enamel must be removed from each tooth when getting veneers, you will always need to have either a veneer or a crown on each tooth going forward.
Remember, with proper care and use, your new veneers could last up to 20 years, but their longevity depends on you. If you have any questions or concerns about how best to care for yours, please contact your dentist for assistance.
