4 Sneaky Signs You Could Be Dehydrated

With record-breaking heat expected this summer, it’s never been more important to drink water. Dehydration can be extremely serious, and due to its somewhat sneaky nature, it can sometimes be difficult to tell its happening until it’s too late. Here are a few ways that your body could be trying to tell you that you need more fluids.

Muscle Cramping / Spasms

When your body’s supply of electrolytes is depleted, it can cause your muscles to spasm or cramp. The best way to restore these important minerals is by drinking water, especially if you are an athlete or will be performing physical activity out in the heat.

Headaches

When your body needs water, it can cause your brain tissue to temporarily shrink. This can give you a painful dehydration headache and can even result in a migraine. Thus, be sure to drink plenty of water and you’ll lower your risk of pain.

Hunger

Remember how mom used to say if you’re hungry before dinner, have a glass of water? Well, it turns out she may have been onto something there, because when you’re dehydrated your body may believe it wants food. This is because your hunger and thirst signals are both generated in the same area of the brain. Thus, if you seem excessively hungry for no reason, try a glass of water or two and see if that helps.

Dry Mouth / Bad Breath

When your mouth lacks hydration, your saliva levels can easily run low, causing a condition called dry mouth. This can be especially dangerous to your teeth and gums, as moisture is necessary to wash away harmful cavity-causing bacteria and food particles.

Remember, there are many ways your body could tell you that you need water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. To safeguard your oral and overall health, be sure to get your recommended intake of H2O (15.5 cups per day for men, or 11.5 cups per day for women) to lower your risk of dehydration and visit your dentist every six months for your regular, biannual exam and cleaning appointments to ensure that dehydration and dry mouth don’t have a chance to harm your smile!
