In fact, more than 5 million teeth are knocked out in the United States every year. If it happens to you or someone you love, you might wonder whether you can put the tooth back in its socket yourself.

The answer is yes, in some cases! However, acting quickly and knowing what to do are essential to giving the tooth the best chance of survival.

Can You Put a Knocked-Out Tooth Back in Place?

If you’ve knocked out a permanent (adult) tooth, gently placing it back into its socket may help save it until you can reach a dentist. The sooner you act, the better. Ideally, the tooth should receive professional attention within 30 to 60 minutes.

However, there’s one important exception: never try to put a knocked-out baby tooth back into its socket. Doing so could damage the permanent tooth developing underneath the gums.

Even if you successfully reposition an adult tooth, you still need emergency dental care. Reinserting it yourself is only a temporary measure, not a substitute for professional treatment.

What Should You Do if a Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to stay calm and follow these steps while arranging emergency dental care.

1. Find the Tooth and Handle It Carefully

Pick up the tooth by its crown, which is the white part normally visible above the gums. Avoid touching the root, as this can damage delicate cells and tissues that help the tooth reattach.

2. Gently Clean the Tooth

If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or saline. Clean water is another option if neither is available. Don’t scrub the tooth, scrape it, or use soap or disinfectants.

3. Try to Reinsert the Tooth

If it’s a whole permanent tooth and you feel comfortable doing so, gently place it back into the socket in the correct orientation. Never force it. If it doesn’t slide into place easily, stop and keep the tooth moist instead.

4. Keep the Tooth Moist

If you can’t reinsert the tooth, place it in a small container of milk and take it with you to the dentist. Saline or a specialized tooth-preservation solution may also be appropriate. Avoid letting the tooth dry out, and don’t store it in plain water for an extended period.

Contact your dentist immediately, even if you’ve managed to put the tooth back in place.

What Happens at the Dentist?

Your dentist will examine the tooth and surrounding tissues to assess the damage. They may take X-rays to check for fractures or other injuries. If the tooth hasn’t been repositioned, they may carefully reinsert it.

The dentist may also use a small splint to stabilize the tooth by attaching it to neighboring teeth while the supporting tissues heal. Follow-up visits are important, as some teeth require additional treatment, such as root canal therapy, to address damage inside the tooth.

If the tooth can’t be saved, your dentist can discuss replacement options once the area has healed.

When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?

Always treat a knocked-out permanent tooth as a dental emergency. Getting professional help quickly can make a significant difference in whether the tooth can be saved. If the injury also involves a serious head injury, heavy bleeding, or a suspected broken jaw, seek emergency medical care.

Knowing what to do ahead of time can help you act quickly when every minute matters!

About the Practice

Palm Leaf Dental in Nocatee, Florida, is led by Dr. Eric Broe and Dr. Farpour Namiranian, known as Dr. Nami.
